Challenge

Costa Express was in the process of developing a five-year strategy to accelerate global growth of its self-service coffee bar business. It needed support establishing project rigour, but also lacked the capability and capacity to design and run a process that would bring clarity and insight to strategic delivery.

Solution

Our unique PMO design created a monthly reporting cycle that clearly categorised strategic activities into Growth, Enabling and BAU. We provided key data in a simplified visual format and created SOPs for the organisation to run future cycles. In parallel, we initiated and ran fortnightly portfolio meetings, leading performance-focused discussion and ensuring the business never lost sight of its strategic priorities. The methodology we developed was templated for Project Managers across the business to use.

Outcome

Our robust project process and its associated tools delivered vital and insightful reporting to the executive team, while regular meetings and calls flagged any immediate actions required. After 18 months performing the PMO function ourselves, we handed the tools and templates over to the Costa team, leaving them with a sustainable process to manage their own portfolio moving forward.
